My name is Rachel.

I am a former high school math and STEM Robotics teacher.

I loved math as a kid! It was my favorite subject and came easily to me - until middle school. I vividly remember 6th grade, looking around thinking 'Why does everyone else get it? What am I doing wrong?' My math teacher sat down with my parents and with me. She said, "Rachel is not bright enough to go into 7th grade math next year." Hearing that devastated me. I thought, 'if a teacher said it, it must be true' - I couldn't do math.

Luckily, my parents refused to believe that their daughter simply lacked the intelligence to succeed. They brought me to a math tutor where we discovered I had gaps in my learning. The extra one-on-one time and practice with a tutor was just what I needed. As a result, I excelled in math, even earning my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and my Master's degree in Secondary Mathematics Education at Virginia Tech.

I want to give students the same opportunity and confidence my parents and tutor gave to me.
